This has been a heartbreaking week. I learned about a young man who took his life after taking his girlfriend for an abortion he had tried to talk her out of having. It makes me wonder how many suicides have happened as a result of abortion. Sadly, there is no way to know it unless the person leaves a note, still there are many we do know of.
Stacey Zalle is one of those women. stacyzallie.org/ as was Emma Beck, http://www.lifenews.com/int626.html who left a suicide note saying she faced such an intense period of grief aborting twins that she killed herself "to be
with them". Then, there is Sarika Powar, who committed suicide
by hanging herself after having the abortion
she didn't really want. http://www.lifenews.com/int1427.html God only knows how many other have considered it. I know I did when I was in the midst of despair from my abortion.
Many studies have linked abortion to suicide, Gilchrist et al, "Termination of pregnancy and psychiatric morbidity," British Journal of Psychiatry, 1995 August, 167(2):243-8, Gissler et al, "Suicides after pregnancy in Finland, 1987-1994, register linkage study," British Medical Journal 1996 December 7, 313(7070): 1431-4, Gissler (67), Reardon D C, Ney P G, Scheurer F J, "Suicide Deaths Associated with Pregnancy Outcome: A Record Linkage Study of 173,279 low income American women," Archives of Women's Mental Health 2001, 3 (4) Suppl 2:104, to name a few.
While trying to brush off conclusions and attribute findings to other issues, Planned Parenthood itself even states:
Researchers suggest that the predictors of severe psychological disturbances after abortion are
- delays in seeking abortion
- medical or genetic indications for abortion in wanted pregnancies
- severe pre-existing or concurrent psychiatric illness
- conflict over abortion
(Lazarus, 1985)
I think it is safe to say many women are conflicted when it comes to an abortion decision.
For sure abortion takes the life of our unborn children, and sometimes it takes the life of the mother and the father too, because of the psychological aftermath.
It is so important to let women and men know help is available and that they can work through the issues and reach healing.
Let's please keep those who have died because of suicide and abortion, those we know and those we don't , in our prayers along with their families, and spread the message of God's healing, hope and mercy.
