I first met Dr Nathanson in the 1980's. We picked up him and his wife at that time, Adelle, and gave them a ride to the clinic where we were demonstrating. I can remember not knowing quite how I felt about him. It was before his conversion to the faith and at the beginning of my healing.I did not know him well, but I always had a sense of his deep contrition and humility.
Over the past few years, I have been praying for him a lot having been kept informed of his illness by Chris Bell, my employer and friend, and over the years, having come to deeply thank God for him.
Just this past Monday, I was in the office and came across Dr Nathanson's address and made a note to myself that I was going to send him a card letting him know he continued to be in my prayers. At our last weekend retreat I had also asked the priest to offer mass for him and I remember thinking how good God is and how He brings good out of everything.
I was moved by his death yesterday. In many ways I think we were kindred souls. I knew that he had been touched by God and knew God's mercy, but I also knew it would be a fierce battle for his soul in the last days of his life. I have no doubt no matter what battles ensued, many were praying for him and Dr Nathanson claimed the mercy of God. It is there that I feel like kindred spirits. As his book "The Hand of God" proclaimed by its title, we, immense sinners, were both touched by the mercy of God. Aware of our sinfulness, we were also deeply aware of the depths of His mercy and forgiveness.
I trust Dr Nathanson, that you will pray and intercede for us. I thank God for the gift of you, your humility and contrition and your deep faith and loving trust in the mercy of God...may you rest in peace.
I also trust you were greeted, not only by the 75,000 babies who deaths you were responsible for, but also the thousands more who I am sure were saved through your witness and the souls of many who were converted because of your example, who are rejoicing in your presence in heaven along with Our Lady and Mercy Himself!
