Today in the Washington Post, there is an article about late term abortionist LeRoy Carhart. Carhart, who supposedly has women's best interests at heart calls recent restrictions on abortion "ridiculous". It is no secret that many of us who have had abortions disagree.
This however, is the most disturbing statement I saw: 'The obstacles only make him more committed, he said. The women who have turned to him for abortions have had severe fetal abnormalities, he said. "We have helped them. ... They'd rather die than have these pregnancies," he said.
Here at Lumina for the past several years we have been working with couples who aborted because of an adverse diagnosis. Having had an abortion near the end of my fourth month of pregnancy, I can assure you, my son had no abnormalities and no one had a problem not only aborting him, but as a teenager coerced into abortion by my dad, I was never told his development nor was I told the dangers of the abortion. Of all the couples we have seen in our Adverse Diagnosis ministry, not one of them "wanted to die" rather than have their babies. In fact, most were pressured by the medical community to have the abortions which they later went on to regret.
The article also states that July 31st kicks off a week long "Summer Celebration of Choice" in Germantown not far from the DC area, where they will be standing against "Anti Choie" protesters. I personally love the idea that this is happening at the same time as the "Summer of Mercy" week , sponsored by the Archdiocese of Washington, Baltimore, 40 Days for Life, Pro Life Action League, Students for Life and a bunch of other pro life organizations.
As I previously have mentioned, a prayer service I developed, "An Afternoon of Prayerful Remembrance" will be part of the program on August 6th sponsored by the Washington Diocese. An Afternoon of Prayerful Remembrance and Intercession (APRI) is, as its name suggests: a prayer service, created in the spirit of the New Evangelization, for the entire local community. Acknowledging abortion’s universal impact through reflections and testimonies offered as part of the day, it gives the opportunity for all of us to come together in an extended period of prayer, contemplation, and intercession in the context of the Church’s Sacraments, seeking forgiveness and healing for our entire nation.
What better time for this service to be happening! I pray that the prayer & intercession during this service showing the impact of abortion on our entire society during this "Summer of Mercy" truly converts those who are participating Summer of Choice...it is no coincidence that they are happening together.
