“Humility is the fertile soil upon which the Divine Sower plants His seed”
(Author unknown)
Humility is crucial for us to do the will of God and to get to heaven. It is also critical in healing from abortion, and really, any sin. What is humility? Humility is to see ourselves in truth, as we really are before God. A scary prospect! Yet, if we were able to do it, we would not have to worry so much about pride or be so shocked by our own sinfulness.
Pride seems to seep into everything we do even without any intent from us. It can ruin even our best intentions.
Most times when we are prideful, we do not even realize it. We excuse our behavior by attributing it to some good we imagine. In the case of abortion, we often justify and rationalize, trusting ourselves or others instead of God.
We think we have the solutions. We are very prideful people. Mother Teresa used to say “Stay out of God’s way.” The truth is, we can spend our lives smacking down our pride!
We seek to be humble, but the paradox is, just the act of thinking we can achieve humility on our own is prideful in and of itself. Humility is a gift from God. An ability to see ourselves the way He sees us, not so we can beat ourselves up, but so that we recognize our dependence on Him for anything good. All good comes from Him.
Like everyone else, I constantly struggle with, and am often blind to my own prideful ways. When it hits me, I still am shocked somehow, which proves that I am very far from true humility, yet it is humility more than anything else that we need for our journey to healing and to God no matter what our sins.
“Humility is the fertile soil upon which the Divine Sower plants His seed,” may we all ask for the grace of being that fertile soil, so that He may plant His seeds and use us according to His will so we will grow into an image of Him in this hurting world.
