"A voice was heard in Ramah,
wailing and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be consoled,
because they are no more."
The Christmas season can be difficult for those who have been involved in an abortion. The birth of Jesus and Mary’s “yes” can be reminders of all the ways we said “no” to the will of God. The guilt and the sorrow can become overwhelming and yet we must often put on a happy face to hide the secret of our sin. Sometimes we wonder how we will ever make it through the day.
The Feast of the Holy Innocents can be particularly difficult as we memorialize the killing of the innocents by Herod, but we cannot stop at the slaughter which shows us the enormity of our sin, we need to finish the story.
“Restrain your voice from weeping And your eyes from tears; For your work will be rewarded," declares the LORD, "And they will return from the land of the enemy.”
In the birth of Jesus we also encounter the event which begins our salvation. Mercy come to earth. The unfathomable gift of Jesus Christ who suffers, dies, and rises again in reparation for our sins. It is a time to rejoice, and be grateful... the joy of the mystery of our salvation.
It's a time to admit what we have done and to bring it to the Lord and amend our lives knowing of His love for us. In the realization of this tremendous love and forgiveness, we come to find amazing peace and joy and a willingness to spread the good news of salvation to others.
Yes, the slaughter of the Holy Innocents was horrific, as is abortion, but our sorrow and contrition and amended life bring the joyful ending to the story where our children “will return from the land of the enemy," and praise God forever with us in eternity!
