"Whether you die now or die later depends totally on God. Any effort on your part to preserve your life, either by living cautiously or taking the best medicine, is futile if God decides, in His mercy, that it is better for your soul if your body is dead. (Behold I Stand at the Door and Knock, pg. 46)
When my son Mike served as a recon Marine in Iraq, I became very close to a lot of other families. We obviously had a bond in serving, praying and supporting each other.
When your son is at war, it is as if the world goes on but yours has stopped as each day you go through the motions and keep praying they will return home safely.
I remember a religious once said to me on a particularly hard day, "You need to trust. People are praying, you have to trust God is going to bring him home safely." She was wrong...the truth is, you have to trust even if he does not come home safely.
When I received the quote above in my email this morning, being Memorial Day, it reminded me of that. I will never forget the early morning call telling us a friend, Mike Glover, was killed. I knew Mike came from a faith filled Catholic family and many people were praying for him too. It is the same with others.
When my son was told by people, "You came home safely because of prayers," he would say, "My friends who were killed had lots of prayers too." So true.
We don't know why God allows things, war is certanly a terrible thing whether it is the war of a country or of abortion, one thing we need to trust in however, no matter what the outcome, is God.
Please remember why we have this Memorial Day weekend and say a prayer for those who sacrificed their lives, as well as their families, in serving our country. Then, take a minute, say a prayer, and watch this video in memory of Mike and all those who left their families way too soon. Jesus we trust in You!
