Many of us who have participated in an abortion can relate to St Mary Magdalene.
Lost and consumed by sin, she could not even begin to look at her life until she had encountered the love of Christ.
Instead of judgment and condemnation, Jesus, although condemning the sins, offered her love and acceptance, showed her her dignity as a child of God, and allowed her to love Him with this new found love.
This encounter with Jesus was life changing. In it she found what she had always been seeking, genuine agape love. Pure love with no motives but to cherish the one loved. It is an amazing story, one that fills us with awe, desire and hope. She has what we all long for.
Mary’s gratitude became uncontrollable.
Without fear she rushes into the house filled with those who would judge her to kiss and wash the feet of Jesus. Her heart had been moved beyond her fear to love and console Him. To somehow make up for all her sins that caused His suffering. To make reparation and share these sufferings out of love for Him
It did not matter what anyone else thought only that she love and console His heart. Nothing mattered anymore but Him.
It is the same love that brought her to the foot of the cross as Jesus was crucified. A love that gave her the courage in spite of any fears she was feeling, to be present at this horrific scene. And there she took her place next to Our Mother Mary, sharing in the sorrow and consoling her as well.
I have in times of my own struggles in healing, wished I could ask Mary Magdalene some questions.
In your humanness,
- Where you afraid to lose His love?
- How did you manage to trust so much?
- Was there ever a fear, when you stepped out in faith, of rejection?
- How did you get past the judgement of the others?
I know her answer would be simply that she knew He loved her. That He was, in fact, love. She knew in the depths of her heart what He had done for her. He had given her His love, and His mercy. She was freed.
Mary’s love was not unrequited. Jesus knew how hard it was for her to love and that the love she showed Him was born out of the purity and unselfishness of His love. He trusted in His love in her. He encouraged and valued it.
As we go deeper and deeper into our healing process we are called to trust with the love of the Magdalene. For many of us although the desire is there, it is difficult to do. It is only extraordinary grace that allowed her to trust so deeply. That same grace is available to us now, we only have to ask for it.
